Does Manic Panic work on dark hair?
As Manic Panic dyes contain no chemical bleaches or peroxides, they won't work on dark or black hair without pre-lightening your hair first. That's because dark and black pigments are super strong and won't be dominated by any colour. For Manic Panic colours to work on dark hair you will need to bleach your hair to light blonde first. If you use Manic Panic on light brown, unbleached hair you will see tints of colour in bright sunlight but you won't achieve a colour strength that matches the advertised product colour.
If all you want to see is very subtle glints of colour in the sunlight, colour your dark hair with Manic Panic hair colour. But if you are really keen to rock the high viz, bold and adventurous colours in their true form, you will need to lighten your hair
How will Manic Panic colours take to my natural hair?
If your hair is naturally a dark brunette shade the semi permanent colours won't be visible without pre-lightening your hair. If your natural hair is fair or light brown, the hair dye will show up but not with the same intensity or vibrancy as on lightened hair. When Manic Panic semi permanent hair dyes are applied to completely natural hair they wash out a little quicker than they do on bleached hair because the dye adheres more strongly to hair which has been made more porous by the bleaching process.
Leaving the hair dye in longer will provide some results on natural hair but it will look more like a tint than a solid dyed colour. The good news is that because Manic Panic hair colours are safe you won't damage your hair if you leave it in longer than the recommended 30 minutes.
How do I ensure I achieve the same result as on the colour swatch?
To achieve the same vivid colour as on the colour swatches you will need to lighten your hair down to a pale blonde colour. The pre-lightening stage is vitally important, as it is the degree of porosity in the hair which controls the degree to which the dye takes. Even natural blondes may need to undertake the pre-lightening step in order to achieve the same result as the colour swatch. Why? Because the bleaching process increases the hair's porosity and allows the pigment to attach to the hair.
If you really don't want to pre-lighten your hair there are some colours which will show up better than others. Consider making a bold and brilliant statement with Enchanted Forest, Deep Purple Dream, Green Envy or Raven or try your favourite colours in the Amplified collection, designed with a stronger formula which also lasts up to 30% longer than the classic cream formula.
The process for applying your Manic Panic hair colour to pre-lightened hair at home is:
1. Wash hair with a deep cleansing or clarifying shampoo to open up the cuticle.
2. Dry your hair with a hair dryer.
3. Apply the Manic Panic hair colour section by section and comb it through for complete coverage.
4. Cover your hair with a plastic shower cap.
5. Use a hair dryer to apply heat which increases the absorption of the dye.
6. Leave for 30 to 45 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with cool water, drying and styling your hair.
Voila! A simple, quick and easy way to have glorious hair that won't go unnoticed!
Is Manic Panic safe for hair?
Yes. Manic Panic semi permanent hair dyes are gentle on the hair and contain no nasty chemicals such as parabens, phthalates or PPD. Manic Panic dyes are also ammonia free, cruelty free, gluten free and contain no animal by-products. Not only is Manic Panic safe, it contains natural ingredients such as chamomile extracts which can improve hair health. Some people claim their hair is better when it is dyed with Manic Panic hair colour.
How often can you use Manic Panic?
Manic Panic semi permanent vegetable hair dyes are gentle on the hair so you won't damage your hair if you use them frequently. Everybody's hair is different and the life of your colour is dependent on how well your hair absorbs the colour in the first instance, what haircare products you use and how often you cleanse your hair. To reduce fading and the consequent need for re-colouring, follow the product maintenance guide to get the utmost longevity from your favourite Manic Panic hair colour.
Is Manic Panic hair dye permanent?
No. Manic Panic hair dye is a semi permanent colorant using vegetable dyes which will gradually fade and wash out. Depending on how you care for your hair, the classic cream formula will generally last in pre-lightened hair for two to four weeks and the Amplified formula will last approximately four to six weeks.
How should I care for my hair when I have used Manic Panic hair colour?
The Manic Panic team don't recommend using traditional colour safe haircare products after using their hair colours unless they are classified as sulfate free. They also suggest that you avoid using shampoos with high quantities of sodium chloride, and oils.
What they do suggest is washing your hair only when it is needed, using sulfate-free, colour safe shampoo and conditioner in cool - not hot - water. As your colour will fade out with each wash, Manic Panic suggest using their dry shampoo (Hair Freshener) in between washes to prolong the life of your colour.
