Is clay good for hair?
Hair clay is a completely natural hair styling product that is excellent for men’s hair or androgynous hairstyles. The main ingredient in hair clay is bentonite, a substance composed of volcanic ash. This earthy product has a thick, matte finish and a medium hold so that your hair looks good but not too ‘done’. It can be used for all types of hair. If your hair is fine, use it to add volume, if your hair is wavy or curly, use it to define and control your curls.

Hair clay is different to hair waxes and hair gel. It contains no alcohol and it has a matte finish, rather than a sticky or hard feel. Its natural healing properties are also known to repair damaged hair and prevent scalp dryness. In turn, this can promote hair growth. The clay coats the hair follicles creating more volume and making your hair look thicker.

Hair clay is also good for the scalp. It draws out impurities from the skin and can aid in the treatment of dandruff.

How to use hair clay?
Like many men’s hair styling products, less is more when it comes to using clay. Make sure that you use a good shampoo and conditioner so that you start the styling process with clean hair.

If you generally use a pre-styling product like the Reuzel Grooming Tonic or the V76 Tonic and Scalp, apply this then begin to style your hair with your hair dryer.

Start with a very small amount of clay (a ball about the size of your fingernail) and massage it in between your hands until the clay is warm and spreads across your palms. Begin underneath and rub the clay into the roots of your hair, all the way to the ends, and continue around to the front of your head. As you work the clay into your hair, it will develop more volume and you will be able to smooth it down or style it up, whichever you prefer.

If necessary, you can use hair spray over the top of hair clay products but usually it won’t be needed. Simply work the clay into the areas that look like they need more.

What does hair clay do?
Hair clay clings to your scalp, hair follicles and hair. This means that your hair is easy to sculpt into whatever style you desire. Hairhouse has a range of different products to suit every hair type. Davroe has a moulding clay for medium to firm hold which keeps hair looking shiny, whereas the Redken Rough Clay has a grittier end look. The Matrix Style Links Matte Definer Beach Clay has a rugged ‘just come from the beach’ look. Our stores have tester pots available so go in and try a few of these products and see which one is right for you. Our friendly staff will be able to give you advice on how to achieve your ideal style.

The bentonite in hair clay also contains minerals that promote hair growth; sodium, potassium and calcium stimulate the hair follicles. This means that hair clay is especially good for fine and thinning hair.

How often should you use hair clay?
Clay is a hair styling product for men that can be used every single day. It is important, however, to wash hair regularly to avoid a build-up of product on the scalp. Simply use small amounts, then increase as needed to create the style you want.
